Habana del Este is Havana's beach side: across the bay, east of the city. This is where the Playas del Este sands sit (Santa María del Mar, Guanabo, Boca Ciega) — the closest white sand to the capital — plus Cojímar, the fishing village that inspired Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea."
It is the Havana locals' beach escape: 20–30 minutes from Habana Vieja, far cheaper than Varadero and more local. Casas particulares run from simple rooms steps from the sand to full houses with sea views; staying here trades the city's nightlife for beach at your door.

What is Cojímar known for?
Cojímar is the fishing village that inspired Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea." There is a bust of the writer by the harbour and the seafood paladares are a draw in their own right.
Playas del Este or Varadero?
Playas del Este is far closer to Havana (30 min vs 2 h) and cheaper, but more local and less polished. Varadero has the longer, resort-grade beach. Choose Habana del Este if you are basing yourself in the capital and want beach days without the drive.
